Database searching

Searching sequences similar to ours helps us annotate (infer function to) the sequences we are working with. The available information about these matching sequences will be used to annotate our contigs with likely functional properties.
From significant matches in the database, we will extract both gene names, general descriptions, and Gene Ontology (GO) categories (specific categorical classifications grouping genes based on cellular and molecular function, along with additional information from the Uniprot knowledge database. GO categories will also be used in step 5 for the functional enrichment analysis.
