BioRuby and BioPerl workshop

22 May 2008

ILRI, Nairobi

RSG East Africa successfully organized a one day Bioruby/Bioperl workshop hosted by the Bioinformatics Platform of the BecA-ILRI Hub on the International Livestock Research Institute campus. A total of 20 participants participated in the workshop. The workshop was facilitated by George Githinji and he did a good job of introducing Bioruby, Bioperl and MySQL to the participants.

RSG East Africa

RSG East Africa is a regional students group of the International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB) and promotes Bioinformatics in the region.

International Livestock Research Institute

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works at the crossroads of livestock and poverty, bringing high-quality science and capacity-building to bear on poverty reduction and sustainable development. ILRI works in Africa, Asia and Latin America, with offices in East and West Africa, South and Southeast Asia, China and Central America.

Biosciences eastern and central Africa (BecA)

BecA’s mission is to improve the livelihoods of resource-poor people in Africa, through the development and use of new technologies and strategies for sustaining agricultural production, improving human health, and conserving the environment.

BecA-ILRI Hub

BecA’s unique feature is the recent establishment of a Centre of Excellence (the BecA-ILRI Hub), a shared biosciences research facility at the International Livestock Research Institute campus in Nairobi. The Hub provides a focal point for the scientific community in eastern and central Africa to conduct excellent fundamental and strategic research to address agriculture-related problems of importance for alleviating poverty and promoting development. The laboratories, scientific services and other resources at the Hub are open to the external research community in central and eastern Africa. The creation and strengthening of human resources in biosciences and related disciplines in Africa is a major function of the Hub.
